404 Not Found
Catches pages that no longer exist — the most common type of broken link that frustrates visitors and wastes crawl budget.
Server errors (5xx)
Detects links that return 500, 502, 503, and other server-side errors — pages that exist but are currently broken.
Timeouts & dead URLs
Flags links that don't respond at all — domains that have expired, hosting that's gone down, or URLs that take too long.
How the broken link checker works
Enter the page URL
Paste any webpage URL — a blog post, homepage, resource page, or any page you want to audit for dead links.
SmartScan collects all links
Every hyperlink on the page is collected — internal links to your own site and external links to third-party domains.
Each link is tested live
SmartScan sends HTTP requests to each link and records the status code — 200 OK, 301 redirect, 404 Not Found, 500 error, or timeout.
Full report with broken links highlighted
You get a clean list of broken links with status codes and error details — ready to fix or export as CSV.
What you see in the report
| Status | URL | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 200 OK | https://example.com/about | Link is working fine |
| 301 | https://old-domain.com/page | Permanent redirect — consider updating |
| 404 | https://example.com/deleted-page | Page not found — broken link |
| 410 | https://partner.com/old-offer | Page permanently gone |
| ERR | https://expired-domain.net/ | Timeout or domain not reachable |
Full-site broken link audit
Enable Site Crawl mode to check broken links across your entire website — not just one page. Crawls up to 500 pages and reports broken links from each one.
Export as CSV
Download broken links as broken_links.csv with URL, status code, and error details. Share with your team or import into your task tracker.
Parallel checking
Links are checked in parallel — not one by one. SmartScan tests up to 15 links simultaneously so you get your full report in seconds, not minutes.
Internal + external links
Checks all links on the page — both internal links to your own pages and external links to other websites, including affiliate links and partner URLs.
Works on any website
Checks links on static HTML sites, WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, and JavaScript-rendered apps. Enable JS rendering mode for SPAs.
Private IP protection
SmartScan never follows links to internal network addresses — all checks are performed safely against public URLs only.
Why broken links matter for SEO
Search bots follow dead links instead of discovering real content
Visitors hitting 404s bounce immediately — hurting engagement metrics
Outbound links to dead pages pass no value and look spammy
Sites with many broken links appear unmaintained to both users and Google
Frequently asked questions
- How many links does the broken link checker test?
- SmartScan tests up to 50 links per page on the free plan. Pro and Business plans support full-site crawl mode — check broken links across hundreds of pages in one scan.
- Does it check both internal and external links?
- Yes. SmartScan checks all hyperlinks found on the page — both links to other pages on the same site (internal) and links to third-party websites (external).
- What HTTP status codes are reported as broken?
- Any link returning status 400 or above is flagged — 404 Not Found, 403 Forbidden, 410 Gone, 500 Server Error, and connection timeouts. 301 and 302 redirects are reported but not flagged as broken.
- Can I check broken links across an entire website?
- Yes — enable Site Crawl mode on the main scanner and select Broken Links as a target. SmartScan will crawl the full site (up to your plan limit) and report broken links from every page.
- Is this broken link checker free?
- Yes — your first scan is free without an account. After registering (free), you get 50 scans per month. For whole-site audits with crawl mode, see our Pro plan.
- Why do broken links hurt SEO?
- Broken links waste crawl budget — search engine bots follow your links and hit dead ends instead of discovering content. They also signal poor maintenance, which can negatively affect rankings and user trust.
- How is this different from Screaming Frog?
- Screaming Frog is a desktop app you install and run locally. SmartScan runs entirely in the browser — no installation, no setup, works from any device. For quick audits and single-page checks, SmartScan is significantly faster to use.
